On the Fall Line of the James River

""

This is an ongoing collection of images focusing on the James River in Richmond, Virginia, USA where the river tumbles through the heart of the city at its intersection with the eastern U.S. geologic fall line. This part of the James is defined by its ageless boulders and rapid waters – elements that engage me deeply. The time I spend there is as much a contemplative and nurturing place to be as it is a rich and diverse source of imagery.

At the river, I am drawn to subjects, compositions and emotions that enter my frame of reference like friends, visitors and sometimes messengers. My exercise is to recognize them and greet them.

These photographs were taken on and along the banks of the James. The locations at various river access points in Richmond are part of the James River Park System.

May what I do flow from me like a river, no forcing and no holding back, the way it is with children.
― Rainer Maria Rilke
